Max Biaggi took his low-revving and torquey Ducati 1098 RS08 around the 3.358-mile Brno circuit on race tires in 1´58.965. With 21 riders under the old Brno Superbike record, set last year by Troy Corser (2´00.674), and 14 riders in the same second, the Czech World Superbike round heads toward Superpole on a record pace.
Biaggi’s time gave him a two tenths of a second advantage over championship leader Troy Bayliss on the factory Ducati. Bayliss was followed on the list by three four-cylinder bikes, Max Neukirchner (Alstare Susuki), Fonsi Nieto (Alstare Suzuki)
The Brno circuit has been resurfaced and the grippy track obviously contributed to the improved lap times. Yesterday's leader Troy Corser crashed early in the session, but came back to take fifth.
This is the seventh time in nine events that there have been 12 or more bikes in the same second. In Valencia there were 17 bikes in the same second, 15 in Assen, 13 in both Phillip Island and Misano, 12 in Miller, 11 in Monza and now 14 in Brno.
