Althea Racing's Superbike World Championship leader, Carlos Checa, put to rest any concerns that he'd struggle to tap into a competitive pace around the high-speed Silverstone circuit aboard his Ducati 1098R this weekend.

The Spaniard threw down a hot lap late in Friday afternoon's provisional qualifying session to steal the top spot away from the surprising Maxime Berger on the Supersonic Racing Ducati, who had just moved into first position with minutes remaining as the marks begin to seriously drop.

Checa's lap stood a fair distance in front of the rest of the pack, circuiting at 2:05.477, while his nearest ten competitors were tightly packed between 2:05.870-2:06.176.

Local heroes Tom Sykes and Leon Camier ranked third and fourth best, respectively, in what has to stand as one of the prime opportunities the young Brits will have to impress all year long. Sykes put the developing ZX-10R in third provisionally, just ahead of the works V4 Aprilia of '09 BSB champ Camier.

A semi-local ace was next, as British Superbike regular John Hopkins backed up his morning FP P1 with a fifth-place showing in the afternoon. The American guided his wild-card entry Samsung Crescent Racing Suzuki around Silverstone a narrow 0.049 seconds quicker than official Suzuki pilot Michel Fabrizio on the Team Alstare Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Reigning World Champion Max Biaggi picked up the pace following his lethargic morning times to work his way into the top-ten mix, which was concluded by home favorite Leon Haslam.

In the process, Haslam reasserted himself amongst the BMW runners, as the returning James Toseland dropped down to 12th, albeit still (just) ahead of his fast-rising BMW Motorrad Italia teammate, Ayrton Badovini. Troy Corser could only manage 18th after his solid showing in the opening practice.

It could be another long weekend for the proud Castrol Honda outfit, as replacement rider Alex Lowes was 15th best at his home venue, while replacement-for-replacement rider, Fabrizio Lai was 21st, ahead only of Hopkins' BSB teammate, John Kirkham.

Superpole will take place tomorrow at Silverstone.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The Superbike World Championship doubleheader from Silverstone, England will air back-to-back on SPEED on July 31 starting at 2:00pm ET.
