PROGRAMMING NOTE: The United States round of the Superbike World Championship from Miller Motorsports Park will air on SPEED Monday, May 28 at 4:00pm ET and 7:00pm ET.

Liberty Racing Team Effenbert Jakub Smrz served up something of a minor surprise at Miller Motorsports Park on Saturday, edging ahead of MMP superstar Carlos Checa to claim provisional pole.

Smrz backed up his leadership of the wet morning session to lay claim to the top time in the afternoon's dry but extremely windy QP at 1:49.842.

Four-time MMP winner Checa was less than a tenth back at 1:49.912 in what was a very good day for Ducati despite their distinct top speed deficit on the long Miller front straight. In addition to Smrz and Checa's 1-2, their teammates, Davide Giugliano (Althea Racing), and Sylvain Guintoli (Effenbert Liberty Racing) ran 5-6 in the session.

Sandwiched in between the Ducati duos were BMW Motorrad Motorsport's Marco Melandri and points leader and '10 MMP double winner Max Biaggi on the factory Aprilia RSV4.

Shock Donington winner Jonathan Rea was seventh with Biaggi's teammate, Eugene Laverty, rounding out the provisional second row.

Saturday saw an all-British Row 3, led by Saturday faller Tom Sykes down in an uncharacteristic ninth on the works Kawasaki. Team FIXI Crescent Suzuki's Leon Camier was tenth, followed by WSS champ Chaz Davies, and Melandri's teammate, Leon Haslam.
