WSS: McCoy Hospitalized in Brno with Cracked Vertebra
Written by: Dennis Noyes
Brno, Czech Republic

Former 500 star Garry McCoy (36) of Australia crashed on the short straight out of Schwantz Corner in Saturday morning's free practice for the Brno round of the World Supersport Championship. The Triumph SC rider touched the back of Andrew Pitt´s Ten Kate Honda and veered off the track into the guardrail. He was transported by ambulance to the helicopter pad and then taken to Brno Hospital where he was found to have a cracked sixth vertebra, broken ribs, and a bruised lung. Early reports from FGSport indicate no further complications.

McCoy´s girlfriend, Gema, said that Garry would check himself out of Brno hospital shortly (by 4:00pm Brno time) and that he would be transported to Vienna Hospital by an Austrian ambulance service
where his condition would be evaluated by his personal doctor. Gema said that Garry was "okay" with no danger nerve damage, and that Garry was "annoyed" because he found Pitt weaving on a slowdown lap.

This is the second Supersport incident of the weekend requiring helicopter transport. Yesterday former world champion Fabien Foret (35) suffered a broken sixth and a cracked seventh vertebra when he crashed his works Yamaha R6 in the first turn of the first qualifying session. Like McCoy a day later, he was found to have no other complications. Doctors said that Foret, who also suffered a small haematoma, would need two to three months recovery time. No estimate on recovery time for McCoy was available at the time of posting.
