You're looking at the driver's standings. Skinner drove last week for a different team at Vegas.

Okay, so what's the point of having Skinner drive the 84 then? I thought part of the goal was to get the team better off in the points.

Skinner's a veteran hand who can give them feedback and qualifies well. Statistics are pretty fun about the guy: finishes lousy, but between 1997-2003 (the chunk of his WC career) he averaged no worse than a 23rd place start.

It seems hard to believe, but according to the standings on NASCAR.com, the 45 (after running 4 races) is only 68 points ahead of the 84 which was in its first race today. So after one race the 84 is closer to the 45 than the 45 is to the 55, the car currently in 35th place (Kyle is 77 points behind 35th).
Unless I'm reading the standings wrong, which I very well could be because that seems hard to believe...
Well, Wingdinger was first car out in the first 3 races, which gave his car 3 points less than 43rd place. Combine that with Kyle's struggles and it's not that shocking.

Maybe it's too early to be looking at the points standings. According to this site listing owner points (
http://www.motorsportsone.net/2008-own.htm, Kyle has 217 points and the 84 has 175. That's even closer than what NASCAR.com shows for driver points.

Aw man, I sure hope they don't do this.
"With the top 35 reverting to this year’s owners points following Bristol next week to determine the guaranteed spots in the lineup week to week, Petty does have another option to get back into the top 35 – he could swap owners points with teammate Bobby Labonte.
Labonte, as the 2000 Cup champion, would have access to a past champions provisional, if needed. Labonte, who is 14th in owners points, would still keep his driver points.
“It’s something we’ve thought about, but we haven’t talked about it [with everyone],” Petty Enterprises Executive Vice President Robbie Loomis said Sunday. “Obviously when it comes crunch time, that’s the time [to decide]. There’s so many people it involves, and you take a bunch of guys that are doing a good job and have circumstances on the other side where we haven’t got where we want to be and mix it up, it creates a lot of heartburn.
“The end result doesn’t really change anything – the driver still makes the Chase and all that stuff can still happen, it’s just a matter of the appearance of it is a hard thing. As a company, we have a lot of employees and have to look at the big picture. We’ll keep our eye on it. ”
Petty said the decision would be made by Loomis: “I haven’t thought about it because I’m not worried about it,” Petty said."

He says he's genuinely not concerned about not being in the top 35 next week because of how good they're running.

The point is to actually get the car in the field.

It is time NASCAR says after this year no swapping points among their drivers to ensure starting spots.
Too late for this year as they already let Hornish/Busch do it but it needs to be done for 2009.

We won't be seeing Petty very much if at all after Bristol. Did you see Kyle Busch push Jarret out of the way on the last lap at Atlanta. That is very symbolic, " move out of my way old man, new man coming through ". Out with the old in with the new, same for Kyle Petty.

If NASCAR hadn't let Penske swap points between Sam and Kurt, he would've just put Sam in the 2.
