I don't remember where I heard it, but did somebody mention yesterday that the only way Petty could swap those points is if they changed the numbers, too?
Last year, the points from the #14 Ginn Racing team were swapped and given to the #15 DEI team, but the #15 team didn't have to use the #14 because of that. If the Petty team was to swap points between its two cars, it could do that with Labonte still being #43 and Kyle the #45 so the sponsors would still be able to use the same advertising materials that are already printed.
Same goes for all the Nationwide Series teams that swapped points from last year. (Childress' #2 and #21, Rensi's #25 and #35, etc.)

Thanks, that's what I thought. I was just confused about what they were saying on TV and wondered if I'd missed something.

This was before the race yesterday:
"Realistically, we'll see how we come out of here at the end of today," he said. "I was just talking to Kyle about it, and ultimately it'll be up to Kyle and Richard [Petty]."
Petty Enterprises will have to see what other teams with past champions do. Kurt Busch, a more recent champion than Labonte, could switch points again with Sam Hornish Jr., for example.
"We'll have to see what everybody is doing, but we think there's a real solid chance of of getting Kyle back in there today," Loomis said. "We've let Kyle down with the car mechanically."
Er, yeah, must be the car...

You outta go to some of these PE fan site. They've stuck there head in the sand and, believe everything will fix it's self. You should see them rooting for other drivers to wreck because it's the only way he can pass anyone. Poor Bobby getting dragged down in the process. Too bad he waited too late a couple years ago to jump from JGR. He's admitted he made a mistake coming to PE on trackside(in so many words).
Bobby is my fave now, but before that it was DW, KP's downward spiral reminds me of DW's last five plus years(minus the stint at DEI). Time to walk away before you embarrass youself anymore. The best way to preserve Adam's legacy is too put that car upfront, let some young man start taking his lumps now.

imo if you're trying to figure a way to get in every week after the first 5 by swapping points maybe you should'nt be racing.....

Reading a post over on PE quoting from NASCAR.COM, it appears that General Mills may not appreciate the points swap. They're now talking about putting Terry Labonte in the car.
I'm a PE fan and I gotta say, that would smell to high heaven.

Petty will have to qualify.
Petty Enterprises officials say they will not ask NASCAR to approve a points swap between drivers Bobby Labonte and Kyle Petty. That means that Petty will need to qualify based on speed for the March 30 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway.

At Martinsville he'll probably be okay. Iexas would make me nervous, though...

Having both Labonte brothers running for the same team even for a limited amount of time would be one helluva deal. Unfortunately I have my doubts as to how likely such an event is to happen. But still nice to dream.
Right now it's a tossup as to whether Kyle will crack the top 35 after Martinsville, he certainly has the ability to do it. The competition however has gotten that much better, just look at all the great teams around the top 35 mark, MWR, BDR, and RFR to name a few. I don't forsee Kyle breaking the top 35 with the amount of competition, that might change mid-season but I doubt it.

Listening to Mojo last night on SIRIUS, he predicts that with the economics of sponsorship as it is, it will not be long before there will only be 43 cars... or less, vying for a starting positions. By default the "top 35" would be negated.
I know he's just a hillbilly, but it makes sense to me.
