Good ridance
??? what we have here is a lack of respect...Kyle's a person carrying a lot of baggage because of his last name, and the loss of his son on a track...for several years he was a perrenial top 10 points runner...3 straight 5ths if I recall...he has overwhelmingly earned the right to say when he wants to stop racing...and people who have your response should be ashamed...he's not a laughable clown like 0 - 4 - 462 waltrip...he brings good will to every function he takes on...why be a very small person about it???shameful...it's your opinion, I guess, but I find it shameful...rf
Kyle's "baggage" as you call it, has nothing to do with his performance or lack thereof - behind the wheel.
Kyle Petty was only ever mediocre and if you are prepared to be honest, you KNOW that he would not have a ride if he wasn't an owner.
Just because his son died on the track is no reason to give him a pass forever.
He can - and likely will - do lots to honour his sons memory after he hangs up his driving gloves.
As for what he brings to the track on raceday - when he makes the field - is a marker for the leaders. They know when they see Kyle Petty in front of them, the are about to start lapping the field.
Time for him to quit. There is no honour in hanging on like this.
The irony is, most of the commentors here were not old enough at the time to know the difference between Kyle or Davey Allison, Neal Bonnet, Alan Kulwicki, Earnhardt Sr., etc. Yet they claim to know all about his career.
Grow up boys. You are just jealous that you are relegated to commenting on a message board and not in a car. As a man, you have a long way to go to come close to filling Kyle's shoes.
I wonder if SR. had lived, if everyone would have been as hard on him in his waining days?

I know, it's Petty Enterprises and he's Kyle Petty, but it still makes me mad to think about. Ask Michael Waltrip the value of a car in the top 35. Petty Enterprises had two, and we've seen this situation coming with the 45 for a long time now. But Kyle didn't want to get out of the car because of his sponsors or because he feels closer to Adam there or whatever, who cares now? Isn't it all academic? Now nobody will be racing that car on Sunday, and I have to wonder if this is what Adam would have wanted.
J., I made similar comments on the PE board back on week 3 and was threatened with banishment for being too "negative". They have their heads in the sand and seem to be in denial about the severity of the situation.

Depends, Dale may have retired while he was still competitive, in 2000 he won two races and finished 2nd in the points.

I understand... and we'll never know the answer. Who's to say what he would have done. We can only guess.
It was just a hypothetical question. One thing I can say... IF he was just turning laps... there would be a few arses here hollering for him to go to the nearest retirement center.

Oh man I'm sure! As polarizing as Dale was, there'd be hoards of 'fans' that would be extremely vocal for Sr to hang it up.

We're living in a different era of NASCAR. Now a top 35 car means everything - Dale Sr never had to deal with that. At least Sr would have had the benefit of a past champion's provisional (and if he was still alive, I wonder if NASCAR would have allowed six provisional starts per championship?
