Any good numbers for 2008 Cup car horsepower ?
I was just reading about Carl Edwards on this site and he claims 900 hp and 200 mph...
I got no problem with the speed but 900 hp ? How many cubes 348 ? or there abouts,
pushrods ,2 valves per cyl burning gasoline and turning 9000 rpm with a small 4 barrel ?
I not saying they are not but I've built some very hot big blocks ( not with those heads though ) and they didn't make 900 hp... Just curious that's all

Some dyno results are there with numbers. Most recent was the second race at Atlanta last year I think, in which the highest was 799hp after the race on a chassis dyno, no idea what that means for a new engine's power while not in a car.

Hmmm..didn't see your quote referencing 799 hp from a Chassis Dyno...
That's huge !!! that means 800 hp from the rear wheels ?
900 + from the flywheel ? We gotta find that quote, I'm very skeptical...
Check this out ...use the link you sent me and go down a paragraph...this is far more realistic heck yes it's a whole bunch of rear wheel HP ! 462 to 464 effective horsepower,
HERE IT IS
Dynos after 150's show Toyota's stronger: Judging from NASCAR’s post-150s chassis-dyno tests, which showed Toyota’s #20-Tony Stewart had at least a 15 horsepower edge at his rear wheels over Chevy’s #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Thursday’s twin races. And Richard Childress’ Chevy engines were about 30 horsepower off the Toyotas, which is some concern in both the Childress camp and with GM officials. NASCAR didn’t post any official numbers, but Stewart’s engine - built by Mark Cronquist, head of Joe Gibbs’ motor shop - pulled around 462 to 464 effective horsepower, according to those familiar with the results. That’s about 15 horsepower more than Earnhardt had and about 30 horsepower more than Chevy’s Kevin Harvick.(Winston Salem Journal)(2-16-2008)

You're looking at numbers on PLATE motors which are supposed to be down about 800-1000rpm as well as producing about 60% of the Horsepower of which they are capable. I think the 750-800 RWH is probably correct for unrestricted engines. They are turning as much as 94-9500 RPM and moving a 3400LB brick at 200MPH. F1 cars move an aerodynamic 1330LB car 210MPH with 7-800HP V8 turning 19,000RPM.

That's the only thing I could find without making a project out of it....
The cars top speed doesn't surprise me. With all they've done to make the aerodynamic coefficient of drag as small as possible and the available torque those engines have, even with the plate, they still go real fast ....
Heck with the plate it seems they go just about as fast as the non-restricted cars, they just take a couple of laps to get there...anyway thanks for the response..I'm
suppose to be working a little...later...

Engines Dyno'd at Atlanta: NASCAR tested eight cars on the chassis dyno after the race to see if there is a measurable loss in power after a 500-mile race with the recent switch to unleaded fuel. Cars tested were those of winner #48-Jimmie Johnson, #20-Tony Stewart, #17-Matt Kenseth, #99-Carl Edwards, #42-Juan Pablo Montoya, #2-Kurt Busch, #22-Dave Blaney and #44-Dale Jarrett.(Roanoke Times), two fo each manuafacturer......no results were mentioned.(3-19-2007)
UPDATE: #44-Dale Jarrett's car topped the chart with 799 horsepower through the rear wheels. #17-Matt Kenseth's car was second with 798 horsepower, followed by the #99 (792 hp), #42 (788hp), #20 (787hp), #22 (787hp), #2 (786hp) and finally Sunday's winner, #48-Jimmie Johnson, whose car measured 779hp, but that was after his massive burnout on the frontstretch at AMS.(FoxSports)(3-23-2007)

What's even more impressive is that most of them stay glued together...Thanks Bill !
Does this mean I should trade my TVR for a Toyota ?

900 is likely accurate at the crankshaft, keep in mind top end HP does not tell the whole story, its really where the motor is making the power at. you want good power coming off the corner, this usually means sacrificing some top end HP. The motors will be tuned to make power at different places in the RPM band depending on which track they are at, and quite possibly even driver styles
Sorry, Go to the link above, they are reading RWHP.
