I don't think so. Then again, I've never looked for one when examining the cars. From the standpoint of "one less thing to break", I would say no.

The closest thing to a vacuum pump on their engines is the air induction system... when they seal off the cowl induction and intake the air from under the car, they'll suck down to the track, at the cost of breathing hot air.

What's a vacuum pump? What's it for? Or, I should say, what does it create vacuum for?

Exactly. I am aware of no vacuum operated devices on a Cup car. Vacuum pumps have been used at times on production cars (mostly diesels or other forced induction enines)) to operate things such as HVAC door motors and the like that were historically engine manifold vacuum operated; today most all of those things are electrically powered.

The OP's question was probably in reference to the brakes. Since it is common on street cars and light trucks to use a vacuum boost system on the brakes, I assume he was wondering if NASCAR did the same thing. So far as I know, they haven't since the '60's.

Considering the huge amounts of high pressure air in the engine area, that is from the wheels pumping air into it, any air that the motor can pull into it is dwarfed by the amount of air that is disturbed by the turning front wheels and tires. It is a large reach and incorrect to say that the carb is sucking the car to the ground.
To seal off the carb from air flow is robbing the engine of horsepower as ram air effect or cold air boxes (drawing air from the high pressure air at the windshield/hood area) are noted to increase horsepower.
Wheels are in a sense, large air pumps, though to a negative effect on the car rather than a helpful one.
Air pumps on street cars are typically used for smog reasons and not for performance, unless that air pump is a turbo or supercharger, none of which are on a Cup car.

BigMan88 good question; you must be a drag racer. In drag racing vacuum pumps are very common especially on wet sump engines and some dry sump engines. NASCAR does not allow the use of a vacuum pump and for the most part they are not needed in a dry sump application like NASCAR. Most good 6 stage dry sump pumps will pull 16 to 20 inches so they really need no other supplementary crankcase vacuum. As you probably know from drag racing you can still run a dry sump system with a vacuum pump, but they are of much greater value in high horsepower wet sump applications where simple valve cover breathers don’t cut it. Great question!

thanks for the answers but im not a drag racer but i do go to a school that teaches you ho to build drag race motors and we do use a vaccum pump and i was wondering if nascar did to.
