Cassill was only 18/19 last year when he was driving the 5 JRM car, but had a pole and 5 top tens in 19 starts and won ROTY. It's comparable to what Trevor Bayne's done this year driving for MWR and CJM.
Cassill also had a 3rd and couple of other top tens in 7 Truck starts last year.

Is Townley related to the Zaxby's owners?
One thing a lot of people forget about talented drivers that never got a shot, is that you have to put yourself in the position to be noticed sometimes. Also, guys in lower tiers have a comfort zone and aren't willing to be small fish in a big pond.
Is Tim still driving for RCR at all this year?
Landon Cassill should be driving fulltime for someone!
I think Tim got a few races sharing the 21 with Harvick in 2007, but I'm pretty sure he hasn't been in one of their NW cars since. I'm not sure what he's doing.
Landon Cassill did impress me last year - he had some really good runs for such a young kid - I hope someone sponsors him. Even a part-year shared ride would be better than nothing.

Another thing to consider is the equipment someone gets in. Remember Kez wasn't anything, or on the radar, until he subbed in the 9 truck at Memphis. It's been on since.
Yeah, Cassill had a couple of good runs, but others in the same car ran better. And, trust me, other drivers opinions go a long way too. If winning drivers say they don't see anything in someone, odds are a car owner won't give him a chance. Or, if a driver approachs his owner about someone, odds are they get a shot. Do you think Biffle would be at Roush without Benny's reccomendation? Probably not. How about JJ at HM without Gordon noticing him? Odds are not. Yes, there are a lot of times when you don't know what a guy can do until he gets a shot. Look at Lamar or Gale. On KHI's hotlist until Harvick worked with them and now where are they? OK, well, where is Gale?
Then there are those who were hyped up big time. Some, like Logano, work out; others, like Chase Austin, don't. It's all the luck of the draw I guess.
BTW, Townley's dad is also the co-founder of Zaxby's. I'd say racing is his play toy.

If the sport didn't revolve around money, do you think that Paul Menard would have a ride without his daddy's checkbook?
Does his daddy's check book keep him in the top 35? I dont mean to sound like a smart***, but the guy has got some talent and deserving of a ride. With the start and park game becoming what it is, it makes since for any owner to use someone else's money for a top 35 driver.

I still think Paul Menard should be in a IndyCar given his family's history with that. But, hey, he's here so all I can say is maybe it'll all come together with the right team.

You're all going to be eating crow when Townley turns out to be one of the best drivers RCR ev.... BWAHAHAHA I can't type it without laughing!
He has 13 DNF's in 26 career Nationwide starts, has only completed 70% of the laps of the races he's qualified for this year and he only had 2 top fives in 23 ARCA starts. This screams full time Nationwide ride with RCR. LMAO
He was as equally bad in the Hooters Pro Cup series. Weapon.

As far as buying a ride, that too has been there forever. Don't believe me? Explain how a country music singer gets a ride in Cup? Yep, Marty Robbins! What did he do to deserve a ride besides have money and an interest to do it? Not knocking Robbins, just stating that buying rides has always been there.
Robbins never bought a ride...he bought the car (he was a pretty good racer). Hate to tell you, but an interest in racing and money have always been required unless you're gonna show up and run around the track in your tennis shoes.

Um, isn't buying a car also called buying a ride? It's not like the Wood Bros. or Petty went looking and found him and signed him up. And, yeah he was a OK driver, not a rolling chicane or anything like that.

same with Steven Wallace.. ol Blinky hit everything but the pace car in HPC.. Daddy still built a Nationwide team for him... heck, daddy even hired tutors to drive a second car so young Steven could get an education.

If this Lotto deal works out, we might be seeing Boobie Johnson Racing in Nascar. Is it really that easy?
