. . . 1962, the .900 mile dirt at Hillsboro, N. C. was the scene on this day when 1960 NASCAR Champion Rex White and his #4 1961 Chevy outran a young and upcoming Richard Petty in his now famous #43 Plymouth. Jim Pascal and Jack Smith also finished on the lead lap in their Pontiacs.
. . . 1973, When the call to start the engine for the start of the Carolina 500 at Rockingham, the pole setter David Pearson's #21 Wood Brothers' Mercury would not fire. It was aparently flooded because it blew out a cloud of smoke that would choke a flock of birds. But, Pearson lead all but one lap of the 492 lap race. Cale Yarborough's #11 Kar-Kare Jr. Johnson Chevrolet was the only other car on the lead lap. Bobby Allison who finished 4th in his #12 Coca-Cola Chevy, 2 laps down, was the only other car to lead a lap.
. . . 1979, Buddy Baker won in the #28 Harry Ranier Olds battle to the finish with #15 Bobby Allison Bud Moore Ford and DiGard Racing's #88 Gatordade Chevy, driven by Darrell Waltrip in 3rd, in the Atlanta 500.
. . . 1984, in his final Winston Cup Victory, the late (GREAT) Benny Parsons' defeated the #3 Wrangler Chevy driven by Dale Earnhardt and the #28 Hardee's Chevy of Cale Yarborough in a fantastic late race battle for the win in the Coca-Cola 500 at Atlanta.
. . . 1990, Dale Earnhardt not only started on the pole in his #3 Goodwrench Chevy but dominated and won the Motorcraft Quality Parts 500 at Atlanta. But not easily because in the late stages of the race he had to fend off Morgan Shepherd in the Bud Moore #15 Motorcraft Ford finishing 2nd and Ernie Irvan in the #4 Kodak Chevy prepaired by Morgan McClure Racing, in 3rd.
. . . 1991, Ken Schrader in the Hendricks' #25 Kodiak Chevy took his last gas stop a little further than Bill Elliott's Coors # 9 Ford 2nd, the Goodwrench Chevy #3 of Dale Earnhardt 3rd, along with 4th place Morgan Shepherd's #15 Ford and Michael Waltrip in the #30 Pontiac. Who all had to stop for fuel before the finish of the Motorcraft 500 at Atlanta.
. . . 2001, Steve Parks dominated the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 at Darlington only to finish 2nd to Dale Jarrett's Robert Yates' #88 UPS Ford. Jeremy Mayfield, Jimmy Spencer and Sterling Marlin rouned out the top 5.
. . . 2007, the #20 Home Depot Chevy and the #48 Lowes Chevy exchanged the lead all day with Jimmie Johnson coming out on top in the (Lowes) Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta. Matt Kenseth and Jeff Burton in 3rd and 4th lead for several laps.
